The journey to welcoming a new life into the world is one of the most exciting experiences a person can go through. For many though, the anticipation of labor is a whirlwind of emotions, from joy to anxiety. Esepecially when that due date hits and baby isnt here and you instantly feel like "what the f have i done wrong"... everyone from your antenatal courses or hypnobirthing courses or yoga has started popping and you are still very pregnant. The pressure begins...
When that first contraction hits or the initial signs of labor appear, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement. However, it’s essential to remember that early labor can last hours, days, or even weeks, and managing this period with calm is crucial.
Early labor (Latent phase) which is typically 0-4cm dilated is the body’s way of preparing for the big event, but it’s often an unpredictable process. While some may experience quick progress, others may find themselves in early labor for an extended period. It’s not uncommon for contractions to start and stop, leading to moments of both hope and frustration. Recognising that this stage can vary from person to person is vital for setting realistic expectations.
The more chilled and relaxed you are and the more oxytocin you can produce the better! Oxytocin promotes contractions and contractions progress dilation! Its a wonderful cycle!
In our digital age... lets not deny we are all addicted to our phones a socials and it’s so tempting to share every milestone, including the onset of labor because you are excited. A quick message to friends and family saying, “Eek! I’m in labor!” can quickly spiral into a barrage of excited inquiries: “Is the baby here yet?” While the intention behind these messages is often supportive and loving, they can create pressure and this pressure slows up labour.
Tips for Managing Early Labor
Stay Present: Focus on the sensations your body is experiencing rather than worrying about how long labor may last or what others are thinking. Use this time to bond with your partner and prepare mentally for the journey ahead.
Limit Communication: Consider waiting to share that you are in labor until you are further along in the process. This can reduce the pressure to respond to frequent enquiries and allow you to focus on your needs.
Create a Calm Environment: Surround yourself with comforting elements—a favorite playlist, calming scents, or supportive people who respect your space. A tranquil environment can help you relax and cope with early labor.
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Breathing exercises, visualisation, and gentle movement can help ease tension and promote a sense of calm. Find what works for you, whether it’s a warm bath, light stretching, or simply sitting in a quiet space.
Trust Your Body: Remember that your body knows what to do. Trust in the process and give yourself permission to take it one contraction at a time. Each wave of sensation is a step closer to meeting your little one.
